Velvet curtains

Velvet curtains offer a rich, luxuriant look and feel

Velvet curtains are an ideal multi purpose window covering. They offer a luxurious look and feel along with room darkening privacy. The typical velvet curtain is available in a variety of rich colors to suit any décor. Velvet drapes are ideal for bedrooms or living rooms because they add so much elegance and character to an otherwise boring room.

Velvet is made from woven fabrics made from cotton or polyester. The soft, deep pile of velvet is one if its most sought after qualities. Used as a window covering, velvet is able to insulate from the cold during winter, and keep the heat out during summer. Velvet drapes are the perfect window covering for room darkening too. So if you need to sleep during the day, velvet should be your top choice as they are just as good as blinds.

When considering velvet drapes for your room, there are some things you should consider first. In a room that is already dark, long dark curtains may give it an oppressive look. If your walls are light and bright and your décor suits it then velvet is a worthwhile consideration. However, try to avoid putting velvet in your child’s room as velvet needs to be dry-cleaned.

Velvet drapes are very majestic looking and are often found in mansions, on stage in a theatre, in banquet halls, and in libraries. Velvet fabric drapes beautifully and can be arranged in fluid folds unlike thicker materials that are more rigid. Consider your furnishings, colors, and decorative theme before choosing velvet drapes. If your not careful, your curtains may overpower the rest of your room.

Crushed velvet is another form of velvet that is equally as beautiful. Crushed velvet has more texture than regular velvet and can give a room a slightly different look than regular velvet. It looks as though it has been crunched up, with the fabric going in different directions so light is reflected creating different shades of light and dark.

Velvet is an excellent choice for curtains, but it doesn’t suit every décor. If you are seriously considering adding velvet drapes to your room but have a little bit of doubt, think about hiring an interior decorator to give you some advice. Or maybe you have a friend with an eye for design, get her to help you decide whether or not velvet curtains are for you!
